Behind the Scenes: “Sweet Dreamz” of Gerlan Jeans at #NYFW

By Laura Camerlengo

For Gerlan Marcel, founder of the five-years-young unisex sportswear label Gerlan Jeans, “Sweet Dreamz” are made of dusty pink Hibiscus polar fleeces, bright white puffer coats and skirts, and black-light luminescent lounge sets. The psychedelic slumber party that is the Gerlan Jeans Fall/Winter 2014 collection expands on the label’s design repertoire and yet remains grounded in Marcel’s own story, with references to 1990s mall culture, which Marcel experienced firsthand as a Midwestern teenager; the Grateful Dead, with whom Marcel toured after graduating from high school; and even the designer herself, as an assortment of totally kawaii (Japanese for cute) emoji characters, fondly known as Gerlémons. Much like Marcel’s previous work, including her recent “Girls of Blaze” sneaker collaboration with singer-songwriter Solange Knowles and Puma, the Gerlan Jeans Fall/Winter 2014 collection will leave you stupefied but smiling.
