There are many different hair loss treatment options available today. Our hair restoration doctors will evaluate your hair loss concerns, and decide with you which options would work best. An in-person evaluation is always necessary, but let’s review some of the common surgical and non-surgical treatment options.
What are the options available for Hair Restoration?
There are two main approaches to hair restoration. There are non-surgical methods and hair transplantation procedures. The non-surgical methods encompass topical and oral medications, laser therapy, and plasma injections. In certain cases these can be effective in restoring hair as well as slowing down the rate of hair loss.
Hair transplantation utilizes individual or multi-hair follicle grafts, and transplants them into areas of hair loss and thinning. We can use a strip of posterior scalp hair and skin, or the follicular unit extraction (FUE) method, where we remove individual hair follicles leaving nearly no visible scarring. The benefit of the FUE technique is that it is possible to maintain a short haircut, without having a scalp scar and still get the thousands of hair follicles that we need.
Who makes a better candidate, women or men?
When it comes to hair transplantation and hair restoration, most people would be a good candidate. We generally see men more commonly than women and they typically express different patterns of hair loss. Despite the different patterns of hair loss, including generalized thinning, or distinct male pattern balding, both men and women can benefit from non-surgical and hair transplant treatments. Most adults are good candidates regardless of age. The procedures are safe, the vast majority of them are done under local anesthesia in the office, there is minimal pain, and nearly no post operative care.
Where does the hair come from?
When it comes to the hair transplantation the donor site, or area where the hair follicles are taken from, it is usually from the back of the scalp, just above the neck. The reason for that is that those hairs generally withstand male pattern baldness. That area also tolerates the appearance of a scar if we do a strip method, or potential thinning if we do a follicular unit extraction method.
What are the benefits of hair transplantation?
One of the main benefits of hair transplantation is that the results are permanent. We take hair that has withstood balding and thinning patterns and we are moving those durable hairs to areas of thinning or balding. Hair transplantation results are predictable, quick and most patients are extremely happy with the results.
