What a wild and fun week it has been in NYC during NYFW. As The Fashion Director of BELLA, I get the honor of attending shows, events, dinners and a ton of fun parties.
There are so many shows to attend in so little time but I wouldn’t trade this interaction with designers, models, and other industry insiders for the world!
This is a time to preview what trends and designs are to be expected in the coming seasons.
The world only gets to see what happens at the actual show but -as The Fashion Director of BELLA- I get access into pre-production as well. Two of my most memorable moments this fashion week would have to be stopping by as a fashion correspondent for Celebrity Page TV and getting an insider look into what a NYFW model casting consists of. I was able to interview the amazing designer Sherri Hill who placed Kendall Jenner in her first ever runway show.
The second top moment would be gaining back stage access to the LaQuan Smith show. This young designer has dressed top celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, Nicki Minaj, Beyonce, Rihanna and the list goes on and on.
BTS (behind the scene) access proves that this is truly a multidimensional industry with so many players who help to make what the public sees in a fashion show actually happen. Backstage you get to see the process: models being dressed, hair and make up execution and the creation of pure fashion magic!
My final moment would be attending the NOLCHA “Ones To Watch” fashion show which spotlights emerging brands including Jody Bell (UK), Olivia B (Cayman Islands), New York School of Design, Just in Case (China), Alice Yim and Minan Wong. All were showing for the first time at the Nolcha Shows except for returning designers Alice Yim and “Made in NYC” brand Minan Wong. I love what NOLCHA does because every major designer was once a new designer and this gives insiders a moment to view new amazing refined and curated talent. This show is always a breathe of fresh new fashion air!
As NYFW SS17 ends I must say, this was one for the books!
Have a look at some of our favorite shows!
Georgine Spring SS17
Georgine gave us unexpected edginess for her Spring 2017 collection. Inspired by Zoe Kravitz and Frances Bean Cobain. Safety pin enclosures donned black and red cut out dresses. Silky, lace slip dresses were paired with bright yellow, polka dotted fur coats for a funky vibe. Sequined spider webs designs were also an unanticipated theme for this spring collection. Accessories were cool and unconventional from Dr. Martens combat boots to the furry heart shaped clutches and fur stoles.
Bibhua Mohapatra SS17
Bibhu Mohapatra’s Spring 2017 collection was everything elegant and opulent. Coral reds, royal purple as well as pale pinks and grays rounded out this collection. Gowns with elegant long trains were made with luxurious silk satin fabrics. Pearl and Ostrich feather embroidery detail pleating and draping gave the gowns movement as they glided down the runway. These amazing gowns are perfect for red carpets at the Oscars.
Carmen Marc Valvo SS17
Carmen Marc Valvo portrayed childlike playfulness in his Spring/summer 2017 collection. The color pallet was simple: black, white, nude, and pops of cherry red. Drop waist, lace dresses were paired with cool sneakers to give this a girly yet city-chic vibe. It was all about the details in this collection. Black and white stripes and rose appliqués were a common theme of the collection. Not to mention the gorgeous swimwear; Carmen Marc Valvo applied rosettes to a one piece and gave us everything we needed for summers in the Hamptons.
Nicole Miller SS17
Nicole Miller brought major color to the tribal themed runway show. Basic black background fabrics really emphasized the bright, colorful geometric shapes. Embroidery was everywhere, from the chambray jackets to the leather skirts and vests. This collection was for the everyday woman. The easy A-line silhouettes juxtapose the bold prints and loud colors. Nicole brought us effortless day-to-night, fun and flirty looks anyone could pull off.
