This classic Neil Simon play makes a perfect New York escape as husband-wife actor duo Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker charm the audience across the eras from the same suite at the famous Plaza Hotel.
Each of the acts introduces three unique couples, with very different personalities and quandaries deftly handled with humor and poignancy by the talented real life New Yorkers. Half of the fun—in addition to the exuberant energy of an audience eager to see their favorite iconic television and movie performers take the stage—is watching the scenes unfold buoyed by the couple’s natural chemistry.
Plaza Suite marks the first time Broderick and Parker share a stage in over 25 years (and Broderick’s first return to Simon’s work since his 1983 Tony win for Eugene in Brighton Beach Memoirs). Though wisps of those long-loved characters many of us grew up with occasional waft through in a playful mannerism here or squeal of delight there, the actor couple throws themselves into the mini-dramas of Simon’s creation with gusto drawing one into the story unfolding in Suite 719 and away from comparisons. The end result is an evening of pure fun, and a sense that living in the Parker-Broderick household must be quite the lark.
*A note of warning, like life, Broadway moves pretty fast. And if you don’t stop and jump on seeing this one— just like that, you could miss it.
Where to Stay: The Plaza— a Fairmont Managed Hotel
With over 100 years of elegance, luxury, and the height of indulgent service, the iconic Plaza Hotel in New York City would be the dream accommodation choice for any special city escape. To have such a strong tie of Neil Simon’s work actually being set inside one of its suites is the perfect excuse to splash out on a memorable stay as this gorgeous hospitality icon. The roll call of A-Listers, supermodels, fashionistas, heads of state and even fictional characters who have claimed this property as their special spot is as endless as the views across the park and cityscape.
Uncompromising attention to detail is the key to this legendary hotel’s timeless grandeur, from the beaux art-inspired chandeliers to earth stone mosaic tiled bathrooms (note the 24-carat gold plated Sherle Wagner hardware, designed specifically for the hotel).
The Central Park adjacent location invites easy access outings, with Broadway’s best just a balmy stroll away, but you would be forgiven if like the couples in Neil Simon’s play, you set your entire experience inside its beautifully adorned walls.
Fortunately, options for sustenance are as gaspworthy as they are close. Try the Afternoon Tea in The Palm Court or enjoy a bubbly libation and lite bite in the soaring-ceilinged see-and-be-seen Champagne Bar.
