Carmel is Calling

Take a Winter Break In this Classic Seaside Destination

Carmel-By-The-Sea is legendary. With its small village charm, centuries old, towering cypress trees and its walkable downtown, this is a getaway that continues to remain on every traveler’s bucket list. Wander in and out of picturesque courtyards in the easily laid out town, which is sprinkled with luxe shopping and creative restaurants.  You’ll want to pick up elegant French bed, bath and tabletop items at Yves Delorme, skincare at Cos Bar, or pop into Bottega Veneta or Tiffany & Co. Restaurants have a sophisticated European flair, so try dining at Anton & Michel, PortaBella, Patisserie Boissiere, or the local favorite Dametra Café.

Carmel is also home to the world-class Pebble Beach Golf Course (where Hollywood royalty like Bing Crosby and Bob Hope traded jokes) and one of the most scenic drives in the world, the coastal cruise of the cliffhanging 17-Mile Drive.

But Carmel offers so much more. From bird watching, beach walking, and wine-tastings, to art galleries and food festivals, to the symphony and the theater, your days will be full of choices surrounded by the beauty of nature. (Cutting down trees in Carmel is prohibited!). Not to be missed is a tour of the historic Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo, founded in 1770 and authentically restored to its original glory.

A great place to stay is the Carmel Mission Inn, a boutique hotel that has just undergone a full-scale renovation of its 165 guestrooms and suites. Created to inspire a cottage-like feeling similar to the aesthetic of downtown Carmel, the mid-century modern influence is combined with a coastal palette that pays homage to the sandy beaches, rocky coasts, Monterey pines and the sparkling blue sea. Sitting fireside in the courtyard watching the sunset over the Pacific is an Instagram moment. Fitness buffs can jump on a Peloton or just work out if desired.

Also new onsite is the Shearwater Tavern, a pub with a retro 1970s vibe. Settle in for a menu of small plates like California cheeses and artisan cured meats, a burger, or a flat-grilled steak. Imbibe a hand-crafted cocktail or try a regional wine with dinner. In the morning, dig into healthy California fare like avocado toast with smoked salmon or overnight oats garnished with fresh berries, toasted pecans, and the local Carmel honey.
