Yoga– Check. Stand Up Paddleboarding–Check. Stand Up Paddleboard Yoga? We’ll, this is the latest fitness trend that I finally got to try and I absolutely loved it! Yep, I spent the last few days in Henderson, Nevada at the Moroccan-inspired Westin Lake Las Vegas Resort & Spa doing things you don’t normally associate with Vegas: Focus on health and fitness. The property is like a desert oasis and it really took my breath away. I’ve been to Vegas a bunch of times and I had no idea a peaceful resort like this even existed in the area. It’s dubbed “The Other Vegas” and now I know why—it’s like your own private lakeside paradise. No neon signs, no flashy lights, no frenzy. In fact, it defies all Vegas expectations. The resort’s in-house adventure boutique “Outdoor to the Core” offers mountain bikes, foot bikes and ElliptiGO bikes (a cross between an elliptical and a bicycle) and there are miles of scenic biking trails in and around Lake Las Vegas to explore.
Of all the fun things I tried at The Westin Lake Las Vegas, I truly connected with Standup Paddleboard Yoga. What’s SUP Yoga? Well, it’s simply a class where you can enjoy the mindful flow of yoga on a paddleboard. Imagine doing downward dog and Warrior Pose while floating on water…trippy huh? s just you, the lake, your paddleboard and your wiliness to let go of fears and inhibitions. Your mind is clear, your heart is open and the experience is absolutely invigorating. There was a moment I thought “Oh gosh, I feel like I’m floating” and then it hit me–I AM FLOATING. Kathy Holesapple, owner/operator of Paddle to the Core taught the SUP Yoga class and she was warm, patient and a true pro. (She happens to be the SUP WPA Champion, too!) Kathy was inspired by the loss of her father to follow her dreams and to live life for today and not wait until tomorrow—a philosophy I whole-heartedly agree with.
If you’re looking for a great girlfriend getaway, this is the spot. You might want to start planning that fall whisk-away with your bestie because the property is just a 25-minute drive from the the Strip. It’s a little bit country, it’s a little bit rock-n-roll! There’s 10 miles of shoreline and activities for the adventurous and fitness-minded. You can party hard in “Sin City” then relax (and repent!) with detoxifying spa treatments to help you get Zen in the desert. For the ultimate ‘double down’, take Kathy’s SUP Yoga class and get the signature Moulay Massage at the spa. That’s hitting the jackpot in Vegas… on a whole new level.
