I first discovered Emmaus Beauty when I was working on a feature spotlighting indie  beauty brands this past summer. After trying out a few of her products, I was immediately impressed.

Emmaus Beauty was born from founder Aminah Sagoe’s mission to create skincare products with natural active ingredients that actually work, and that you can truly trust on your skin. It all began when she started sifting through countless products on the market in search of formulas that would help her own skin issues. Her search fell short, and led to a discovery that many ingredients commonly used in skincare are either ineffective or straight-up harmful. After learning how ingredients work with different skin types and how to safely incorporate them into effective formulas, she created her own line of wholesome products that produce lasting results.

Mission accomplished! Aminah’s  products have a permanent place in my own personal skin care routine so I reached out to her to ask her about the hero ingredient that delivers such an amazing glow — fruit acids.

So why are fruit acids  considered the main squeeze in many skin care products?

According to Aminah, fruit acids work to exfoliate your skin and allow brighter skin to be revealed, plus they help smooth out rough skin, correct discoloration from scars and age spots, improve appearance of surface lines and wrinkles, prevent acne breakouts, and promote collagen and blood flow.

Here, she shares her expert advice:

When to Apply: The usage depends on the product, but less is definitely more. For instance, our AHA 10% Brightening + Exfoliating Cleanser has a recommended usage of once daily, and our 7.5% Fruit Acid Resurfacing Gel + Kojic Acid has a recommended usage of 2-3 times per week.

How to Apply: People have the tendency to use too much product, or they leave on their skin for longer than recommended. This will make your skin extra dry and extra sensitive, which may lead to tenderness and even more breakouts.

More to Consider:  Fruit Acids thins out the top layer of your skin, making it more sensitive to the sun, so it is crucial to use sunscreen when using products that contain fruit acids.

Moisture! Moisture! Moisture! This is very important, especially after using products that contain Fruit Acids. My favorites at the moment is our Alpha Arbutin Brightening Combo – Alpha Arbutin Brightening Cream & Serum. The duo contains Alpha Arbutin which helps even out your complexion as well as fade dark spots, plus the serum contains Hyaluronic Acid which drenches your skin with extra moisture.
