There’s a brand new “healthy” alcohol hitting the shelves in New York City just in time for the holiday season. SpikedSeltzer was created so that you can indulge in a fun night out without having to snooze through your early workout the next morning.
So, What’s In It?
Healthy Booze sounds like an oxymoron but it is the best way to describe SpikedSeltzer. It is made from purified water with flavors derived from cold-pressed citrus and the 6% alcohol content comes from the fermented sugars. As a result of this whole process, SpikedSeltzer is clean and clear avoiding the sugary sweetness of wine or the heaviness of beer. And it’s only 5 carbs!
Building A Better-For-You Beverage
Founder and fifth generation brewer Nick Shields noticed that there was an important category missing from the liquor aisle. His finance partner, Dave Holmes, wanted to switch from saving companies to building one.
Shields started his career managing production for Nantucket Nectars right out of college and then winemaking for the Wolffer Estate on Long Island. He went on to study food science at Cornell University and fermentation science at UC Davis going on to develop products for beverage titans Pepsi and Cadbury Schweppes. After all this experience, he was inspired to create SpikedSeltzer. He explained: “My goal was to invent a new category of better-for-you alcoholic drink.”
Shields wanted to create a new beverage combining his brewing and winemaking experience with his interest in using natural flavors. As Shields elaborated, “SpikedSeltzer is all natural—no junk. It’s low carb—no guilt, and it’s half as strong as wine so you’re free to have a couple. Because it’s low-sugar and has zero sulfites, you won’t get the next-day slump you get from drinking wine.”
