The first thing you notice when stepping in to Ooviña Tapas and Wine Bar is the fun, unique decor. Alit with purple LED lights, hand-painted grape vines and white flowers hanging from the ceiling left and right, and a giant display of time-lapse photography of New York City taking up the entire back wall exude just the right vibe, enticing the young and hip to come in and see what it’s all about.
Located in Hell’s Kitchen, Ooviña is the brainchild of Stephen Hoover and Giovanni Morales, who have long been business partners, having previously owned Market Cafe. Morales brings his Central American background to the restaurant, serving up Latin style tapas, that are not only tasty, but are also, surprisingly, gluten free! In keeping with the times, and looking to cater to any and everybody, Ooviña’s gluten free menu offers delicious fare that will put a smile on the faces of those who suffer from gluten sensitivities…and even those who don’t!
Some of the must-try items on the menu include the Hand Cut Papas Fritas, which are comprised of spiced fries with white truffle oil, parmesan and herbs; Arroz Con Chorizo, a spin on the classic paella, with saffron arborio rice, jalapeño sausage, green peas, carrots, cherry tomatoes, red and green peppers, pearl onion, and parmesan; and their Crisped Pork Loin Tacos, made with red cabbage, avocado aioli and tomatillo salsa. All menu items are priced well under $20 and are great for sharing — making it not only affordable, but easy to sample as much as you want.
Additionally, Ooviña has a wonderful cocktail menu, which flaunts crafted cocktails, Jam-pagnes (champagne cocktails infused with house-made jams and marmalades), and sangrias. Each cocktail is as clever as it is refreshing. Not only that, but they also specialize in regional wines, perfect for pairing with your meal. The waitstaff is fully learned in background of each wine and knows just which one to pick to go with each dish.
Perfect for a date night, girls or boys night out, or anything in between, Ooviña is a welcome addition to the neighborhood, giving New Yorkers a refreshing new spin on the gluten free lifestyle.
