The Friends of Greystone annual membership event took place at the historic Doheny Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills last month, celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the American Film Institute’s 1969 opening of Greystone as their campus for advanced film studies. Special exhibits and videos were installed inside the mansion for this annual event presenting the Doheny family history, treasures, and the films made at Greystone.

Completed in 1928 for the son of oil tycoon Edward L. Doheny, Greystone Mansion & Gardens is a Beverly Hills and Los Angeles landmark, an 18.3 acre public park boasting terraced gardens, reflecting pools, opulent fountains and a palatial manor home.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the mansion typifies both the opulence and craftsmanship of the era. There are fifty-five livable rooms within the 46,054 square feet of living space in the mansion, including servants quarters on two floors to accommodate a live-in staff of fifteen. All of the oak banisters, balustrades and rafters were hand carved, while each of the five chimneys was designed and crafted by a different artist. Dramatic black and white inlaid marble makes up the floor in the Grand Hall and an elaborate living room held a balcony where musicians often performed on special occasions. The site has been an iconic location for motion picture and television shoots and has been featured in dozens of films, including The Big Lebowski, Spider-Man, The Social Network, and most notably, There Will Be Blood, which is based on Oil! a novel by Upton Sinclair loosely based on the life of Doheny.
Friends of Greystone is a non-profit dedicated to raising funds to protect, restore and preserve this historic California estate. At the recent membership event guests enjoyed gourmet cuisine from Bedford & Burns, Georgos Premium Greek Wine and entertainment from The Dave Damiani Trio.
