It is undeniable that icons of Old Hollywood such as Marilyn Monroe and Bette Davis had makeup that was always on fleek. Decades later, their look is still a go-to for celebrities from J.Lo to Taylor Swift when they hit the red carpet. It is commonly characterized by matte skin, red lips, and a winged liner with a bright matte shadow on the lids. While this is a foolproof formula that doesn’t need to be changed, now is a great time to step out of your comfort zone and modernize the look.

Here are five easy ways to sprinkle the trends of 2017 into Old Hollywood glam. Try them all at once, or one at a time if you’re not ready to fully commit:
Strobe
Matte skin is a must-have to achieve Old Hollywood glam, but give that matte finish a fresh update with some strobing. Apply a fine highlighting powder above the cheekbones, under the brow, down the bridge of the nose, and at the bow of the lip.
Go for Gold
Use a gold or champagne shimmery eye shadow for the lid instead of the expected flat matte white shadow commonly used in this classic look.
Cut that Crease
Defining the eyes with a cut crease will add instant drama and make the lid color pop even more. Espresso and charcoal shades work best with most complexions. The deeper and sharper the crease, the more intense the drama.
Use White Liner in the Waterline
Add white liner to the inner rim of the lower lash line for a fresh, modern spin that instantly brightens and widens any eye shape.
Deepen Your Lip
No one should mess with the classic red lip, but step out of your comfort zone by opting for a trendy oxblood, rich wine, or even chestnut matte lipstick. As with the original look, keep that pout matte. And be sure to exfoliate and hydrate your lips before applying color for lips smoother than a baby’s bottom.
