Honoring Dominican Fashion Designer Oscar de la Renta

De la Renta once said, “I am not interested in shock tactics. I just want to make beautiful clothes.”

Oscar de la Renta’s career began in the 1950’s. De la Renta lost his 8 year battle with cancer on Monday at his home in Kent, Conn. He was 82.

During this time however, Mr. de la Renta grew his business in quantum leaps and  linked his name to celebrity events like the Oscars. Jennifer Lawrence, Oprah Winfrey, Amy Adams, Taylor Swift and Sarah Jessica Parker are just a few A-listers to wear his creations.

He recently made headlines around the world by making Amal Alamuddin’s wedding dress.

De la Renta was a red-carpet king; Hollywood defined him for a new age.

Back in our native Dominican Republic was where he really revealed himself. He was regarded as an unofficial ambassador and he built two homes there. One in Casa de Campo, the second in Punta Cana which he built with his second wife, Annette, whom he married following the death of Francoise, from cancer, in 1983.

In addition to Annette, Mr. de la Renta is survived by a son, Moises; three sisters; three stepchildren; and nine step-grandchildren.

His legacy will forever be remembered, specially for showing the world that kindness never goes out of style.
