How to Build The Perfect Workout Playlist

By Sari Beth Rosenberg

Want to curate a playlist that will inspire you to perspire? Check out these expert tips:

Follow The Beat & Mix It Up
Christianne Phillips, DJ and Senior Master Spin Instructor at Revolve NYC, suggests that for running or spinning, you should find songs that fall between 90-110 BPMs (beats per minute). And to really maximize your workout, mix up your genres  – don’t be afraid to sprinkle in a little bit of hip-hop, pop, mashups, etc. “And scour to get DJ playlists and remixes – including my own,” she adds.

Spring is a great app for your smartphone that has workout playlists that sync to your desired workout speed.

Find Your Music Zen

When curating a yoga playlist, Ashley Dorr, teacher at The Shala in New York City, likes to mix in newer artists like London Grammar with more traditional yoga artists like Garth Stevenson. For Lauren Imparato, founder of I.AM.YOU yoga, also in NYC, any type of beat or genre works. “Play what inspires you – hip-hop, electronica, country, jazz or even flamenco,” she encourages. “Our house favorite is David Bowie’s ‘Let’s Dance.’”

Seek Professional Help
Lindsay Luv, famous Los Angeles DJ known for spinning at the hottest clubs and for famous brand events like Victoria’s Secret, thinks you should stick with the experts. “Stream my playlists and other favorite DJs on the Spotify and apps from your smartphone,” she says. “Or, just turn up my favorite workout album: Madonna’s ‘Confessions on a Dance Floor.’”
