In Honor of Black History Month, Celebrating Some of BELLA’s Favorite Icons

Black History Month is an annual celebration of outstanding African Americans throughout history and their exceptional achievements in their respective fields. This February, BELLA would like to recognize some of the individuals we have worked with, featured, interviewed, and admire. In fields such as Beauty, Fashion, Arts + Culture, Photography, Philanthropy, Entertainment, Music, and Media, these people are pioneers, icons, and moguls.

Lisa Price is the founder of the multi-cultural beauty brand Carol’s Daughter. This line of hair and body products, “made with love,” began in Lisa’s Brooklyn kitchen and was encouraged by her mother, Carol. BELLA’s EIC, Vanessa Coppes, interviewed Lisa for BELLA TV at the Create + Cultivate conference, in New York City, for women in business. Watch the full interview here.


CD Greene is a designer to the stars, dressing some of the biggest names in Hollywood and dazzling the red carpet with his signature designs using mirrors and crystals in sultry silhouettes. Arts + Culture

Charlotte Nebres broke barriers and danced her way into ballet history, when she became the New York City Ballet’s first Black Marie, the young heroine of The Nutcracker. Matthew Jordan Smith is an American photographer who has had the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Halle Berry and Martha Stewart in front of his lens. Shooting for numerous magazines and top brands, such as Pantene, Sony and HBO, Matthew has taken his talents abroad, splitting his time between personal projects in Tokyo and work in New York and Los Angeles. Michelle Obama was the first African American First Lady of the United States, from 2009 to 2017. In addition to her time in The White House, Michelle is also a lawyer, author, activist, and philanthropist, with a never-ending list of causes and charities she has supported. Perhaps one of her most notable accomplishments is founding the Girls Opportunity Alliance, a program of the Obama Foundation, which seeks to empower girls through education. La La Anthony has achieved staying power in the entertainment industry as an actress, producer, TV host, author, and entrepreneur. Her focus and confidence are just a couple of the attributes that helped her begin her career at the young age of 16.
