If you think you’ve tried every “extreme” workout there is, you probably have yet to check out CrossFit, the workout that combines constantly varied, functional movements with high intensity. The buzz around CrossFit has been growing nationwide as the training program for the military, first responders and law enforcement personnel. Staten Islanders now have the opportunity to work out in the borough’s first and only location.

Staten Island CrossFit, which opened in March, is owned and operated by brothers and Staten Island natives, Dan and Marc Messinger, who not only preach but practice the CrossFit lifestyle. They brought CrossFit to Staten Island as part of a commitment to promoting wellness and helping people in the community to lead more productive lives.

Dan and Marc, certified CrossFit instructors, who sport “Coach” t-shirts around the gym, lead members in the Workout of the Day or “W.O.D.”: a combination of gymnastic, weight-lifting and calisthenic exercises grouped into three-minute intervals followed by a minute of rest, which repeats for five rounds. The W.O.D. is designed to maximize the workout to each individual’s experience level, enhance cardiovascular health and increase core strength. Since the W.O.D. changes each day, it enables CrossFitters to break out of repetitive regimens reminiscent of more “traditional” gyms and continuously challenge their bodies.

On a typical Saturday morning, you’ll find several addicts engaged in front squats with weights, power cleans (snapping a barbell up from the floor and onto the shoulders), burpees (also known as squat thrusts) and push-ups, striving to improve their performance for the next class. Scores –the total number of repetitions completed throughout the entire workout – are kept on a whiteboard for all members to see, as friendly competition is encouraged. Although, the real competition is with yourself, according to the coaches.

Staten Island CrossFit, located at 3801 Victory Boulevard, Staten Island, is an official affiliate of the Reebok CrossFit Games. Free introductory classes are offered every Saturday at 12 p.m. and discounts are available for military personnel and first responders.
