Salt and Sunscreen is the disruptive swimwear brand, specifically launched for people of color, with versatile fabric hugging the body in all the right places. With a blend of chic, feminine and bold elements, the Nigerian female behind the brand, Pinghwa Okorie, had comfort in mind while creating the pieces, featuring adjustable straps. Inspired by her beachy and bustling hometown of Lagos, Okorie developed a passion for swimwear and beachwear, and the selection of colors and prints reflect the ‘stand out’ feature encompassing her essential designs, driven by an emphasis on the perfect fit for different body types.
Speaking on the origins of the brand, the founder and CEO said, “Growing up in Lagos, it was hard to find swimwear that I loved and felt comfortable in. I wanted to create something that was soft on the skin—that was high quality and sophisticated and that’s how Salt and Sunscreen was born. As a beach lover and traveler, I’m always looking for pieces that are fashion-forward and chic. Now I can bring that beauty and style into pieces for all women.”
In her most recent collection, Pinghwa Okorie captures joys of life found within Nigerian nature. The yellow pieces are inspired by the bright sun, while the green draws from nature and plants, and the Merah Hati shade was influenced by the red sand found in her father’s hometown in Enugu state. She says, “I wanted to showcase an emblem of colors that represent various aspects of life at home. At the same time, I wanted tones that compliment various skin tones.”
