Tell us a little bit of your background & how you began Baie Botanique, making it the success it is today?
I’ve been in the beauty industry for almost 30 years starting out as an esthetician and becoming a make-up artist and natural skincare advocate. I began by going over and over literally 100’s of formulations (I drove my formulation team crazy) until we had a product that would fit with my personal formulation goal which is “Luxury – Natural,” a skincare product that has the highest possible organic content and most natural preservatives but feels on application, like a non-natural luxury skincare product.
Tell our readers about your time as a makeup artist & how you decided to make the transition to becoming your own boss?
I spent many years working as a make-up artist and I felt often that as much as I loved it and still do that I was always fighting somewhat the stuff quo of applying a lot of make-up, it just didn’t sit right with me to cover a person’s skin. My take on it was to talk to my clients about what they could do with their skincare routine to enhance their skin naturally so that they could get away with wearing minimal make up and ultimately no foundation or base. I also did this by talking about nutrition and healthy skin habits.
What is your process for coming up with a new product?
LONG! It’s pretty standard for me to invest a couple of years into each new product as I am super picky, and I have a lot of criteria that the product must live up to. I have a little personal mantra that the product should be able to win awards. But in reality, it’s much more to do with the right ingredients and that the product is able to demonstrate an improvement to the skin’s appearance otherwise it’s a non-starter for me.
Is there anything that really inspires you when you prepare to launch new products?
I’d have to say it’s the loyalty and support of my customers. We have some wonderful people in our community and their enthusiasm for when we are launching something new is very inspiring. I also get a lot of pleasure in knowing that we are launching something that meets the needs and requirements of our customers as often we’ve been asked for a solution to a certain issue.
How would you describe a day in the life & at the office?
We have a small team @ Baie and I’m very much involved in the day to day business activities in between school and nursery runs for my 3 and 8 year old boys. My days’ work usually goes on into the evening after the boys are tucked up in bed as I’m working on multiple time zones.
Do you have any advice for our readers who are interested in creating their own brand or want to get involved in the beauty industry?
I’d say in regard to starting your own skincare brand, it is very challenging. So, being confident that it’s what you want to do & don’t expect to take anything from business in the first year. In the end, you’ll see how rewarding it is. Becoming a make-up artist for example is a great career if you are more on the creative side as you really get an opportunity to express that. So, if you really want to do it, I’d say go for it.
At BELLA, we believe that Life Is Beautiful. How would you define beauty?
I would define beauty as a feeling, a sense of contentment with ourselves and how we look, that we are doing everything we can to look our best by taking care of ourselves the best we can at any given time.
Lastly, where can everyone follow you for more information or news on any upcoming projects, releases, etc.?
