Postcards From LA: Snapshots of LA Living

West Coast living for East Coast dwellers … the best of what to do the next time you’re in California.
Detox With the Stars
What better way to kick off the New Year than with a trip to a detox spa? But We Care Spa located in Desert Hot Springs (just over an hour outside of LA) isn’t just a regular spa. It’s a lush, hidden gem and a celebrity secret tool to looking their best ahead of any major project, award season or just for some R&R. The liquid-only resort promises to detoxify the body, revitalize the mind and restore the spirit – and that it does. The last time I was there I bumped into Cameron Diaz and her mom sitting around the kitchen table. It’s also a favorite spot for Matthew McConaughey, Gwen Stefani and Gisele Bundchen. After either a three-day weekend stay or a full seven-night trip, you’ll leave feeling like you’re floating on air from all the amazing juices, yoga, meditation, spa treatments and daily colonics!

Italian Food with a Catch
Lauded as one of LA’s best new Italian eateries, Bucato is further proof that all of the good pasta restaurants don’t just exist on the East Coast. Bucato’s rosemary focaccia is already a thing of legend with its crusty outing and cloud-like middle. The Crozetti Stampati Walnut Pesto stamps your palate with gusto … and be sure to save room for the Italian doughnuts. The catch? Bucato has a no-phone policy, which some people love and others have fought against. It just means you have to give your dining partner your full, undivided attention while enjoying the most delicious meal. Trust me – it’s totally worth staying off Instagram and Facebook!

West Coast Color
World-renowned hair color specialist Negin Zand has a new home salon and to the delight of Angelenos, it’s right in the heart of West Hollywood! The celebrity colorist is best known for coiffing the likes of Angelina Jolie, Madonna, Nicole Kidman, Jessica Biel and Jennifer Aniston. The Iranian-born hair guru is now a resident at salon Benjamin with Negin Zand. The beauty bar has also just launched Selects, a boutique apothecary that features a collection of the world’s most exceptional luxury beauty products on the market today curated by Benjamin Mohapi and Genavieve Lynch.

Circuit Works
As a mecca for exercise trends, Los Angeles is certainly not short of places to work out, but a firm favorite is Circuit Works, located in Brentwood and Santa Monica. The rigorous but fun circuit training session is a total body workout that gives both an aerobic and resistance burn in one hour. I personally lost 60 lbs. in 2013 through the amazing sessions that consist of 10 two-minute rounds on the treadmill, interspaced with a two-minute burst at each of the resistance stations. My trainer Delvon Flowers, along with all the other great fitness instructors at Circuit Works, is the best team in LA to whip you into shape! And sweating it out with Circuit Works fan Josh Duhamel is always a fun experience.

Set this apart, since it’s not a place:
Special Spotlight
Kathy Eldon’s life was turned upside down when her son Dan Eldon was stoned to death in Somalia – murdered by the people he was trying to help. Publishing his art and starting a global foundation helped the British writer to heal, and she has bravely turned her tragic loss into a journey of self-discovery. Her story of survival, spirituality and overcoming the most brutal loss is soaked into the pages of her critically acclaimed book, “In the Heart of Life,” which encourages everyone to be a positive force in the world, regardless of heartbreak or turmoil.
