Varicose vein treatment is your specialty, and more people suffer with this unsightly, painful issue than many may realize. Let’s start by identifying exactly what varicose veins are and their causes.
Varicose veins are enlarged bulging veins that can be blue, red, or flesh- colored. They’re often raised above the skin and look like twisted, bulging cords. Varicose veins may form whenever blood pressure increases inside your veins. This can happen because of pregnancy, constipation, a tumor, or being overweight or obese. We offer minimally invasive varicose vein treatment options.
How does a potential patient know when it is time to treat their varicose veins?
Chronic venous insufficiency, CVI, is a progressive medical condition in which the valves in the veins that carry blood from the legs to the heart no longer function, causing blood to pull in the legs, and the veins to swell and stretch. Failure of the valves in leg veins to hold blood against gravity leads to sluggish movement of blood out of the veins, resulting in swollen legs.
An estimated 40% of people in the United States have CVI. It occurs more frequently in people over age 50, and more often in women than in men. Common signs and symptoms of CVI include leg heaviness and fatigue, leg or ankle swelling, leg pain, aching, or cramping, skin changes or rashes, and ulcers or open wounds and sores. If you experience these signs and symptoms, it would be worthwhile to make an appointment for a consultation and ultrasound scan.
What are the treatments you offer and what is the effectiveness, severity, and recovery period of those treatments?
The initial consultation will take about 1-1/2 hours and will include an ultrasound scan to check the veins for reflux and to rule out any deep vein blood clots, which can be a life-threatening condition. If you require treatment, the procedures are performed in the office in less than an hour. Depending upon how many treatments you’ll need, you may need to return to the office a few times for these quick treatments. You may drive yourself home after the procedures.
The consult, ultrasound scan, and procedures are all covered by most insurance companies. If you happen to be paying out-of-pocket, it will be a one-time fee of $250 for the consult and ultrasound, and 100% of that amount can be applied toward the total cost of vein procedures.
Besides varicose vein treatment, you have newly introduced Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT). Could you expand on what that is?
BHRT is a way to replace hormones that naturally decrease over time, affecting us mentally and physically. It’s safe and has been proven to work. This differs from other hormone replacement therapies in that there is a steady level of hormones that you maintain, rather than having peaks and valleys throughout the day like you do with injections. Moreover, there are no side effect risks of developing blood clots or liver problems. BHRT is about precision medicine in which the individual will be sent to the lab for blood levels to be drawn. Based on these results, calculations will be made on the necessary hormone replacement. The procedure involves inserting pellets into the buttock/hip region by making a small nick in the skin, which takes less than 30 minutes and is relatively painless. Another set of bloodwork will be drawn in 4 to 6 weeks to determine the new hormone levels. The benefits of BHRT are brain, heart, and bone health. Other benefits include having more energy, prevention of breast or prostate cancer, weight loss, and increased libido.
