The Greenwich Village Chelsea Chamber of Commerce plans to Invigorate Bleecker Street and the surrounding neighborhoods with a Holiday Shopping Initiative.
And to kick off this year’s holiday shopping season, the Chamber and the stores along Bleecker Street will be hosting a month-long shopping event, #ShopBleecker, to encourage consumers to support the businesses along Bleecker Street.
Throughout the month of November, select retailers along the 20 blocks that comprise the beautiful and historic Bleecker Street, will be hosting in-store events and offering special deals/discounts.
Additionally, GVCCC is looking to activate a series of short-term businesses and assembling a coalition of storefronts to combat the rising vacancy issue on Bleecker Street. With approximately 38 vacancies between 8th Ave and Bowery, this leaves Bleecker Street with a sizable 14% vacancy rate. By supporting the businesses on (and adjacent to) Bleecker Street, consumers will be putting money back to work in the area. These businesses are the backbone of our local economy; adding character, a sense of a community, employment opportunities and a strong economic foundation.
“We cannot allow market focuses to run roughshod over [Bleecker St] any longer. By drawing attention to local retailers, filling vacant stores with active temporary businesses, and utilizing new technological innovations to reduce vacancy rates, GVCCC’s #ShopBleecker will push back on high-rent blight and help resuscitate one of New York’s most vibrant and historically relevant streets,” said State Senator Brad Hoylman -27th Senate District.
The goal of this endeavor is to revitalize the neighborhood, generating more foot traffic and revenue for area businesses, and bring new businesses into the community. To launch the first annual #ShopBleecker event, The Greenwich Village Chelsea Chamber of Commerce will be organizing a street wide cleaning effort, repair tree pits, and decorate for the holiday season. Additionally, they will be hosting a party for businesses in the community and their clientele on November 1st.
On November 18th, #ShopBleecker will be coordinating events for the whole family. These include fun activities for children, fitness classes, sampling opportunities, giveaways, raffles and a walking tour with Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation who will highlight the amazing history of Bleecker Street.
For everyone from Bob Dylan to Dylan Thomas, Jimi Hendrix to Alicia Keys, Bleecker Street has been the center of what’s great about New York City, and now with #ShopBleecker, the Greenwich Village Chelsea Chamber of Commerce is reminding everyone that Bleecker Street is still one of the best places in the city to shop, eat, and play.
To thank shoppers throughout the month, local businesses have donated goods and services to be raffled off on November 30th at 5pm. To enter, shop at any of the great businesses participating in this initiative and bring your receipt(s) to 359 Bleecker Street* throughout the month and exchange them for raffle tickets. How much you spend determines how many raffle tickets you earn. For every $50 spent, you earn one ticket.
