Sofía Jirau, Without Limits

Sofía Jirau is a Puerto Rican professional model with Down Syndrome, who in a short time has shown the world through her passion for modeling and beauty that there are no limits—inside or out.

On February 14, 2022, Sofia became the first model with Down Syndrome for Victoria’s Secret as part of its Love Cloud Collection underwear campaign. This historic achievement made headlines around the world.

Sofía began her modeling career on March 26, 2019, the day she turned 23. Since then, she has modeled for various designers and recently participated in Los Angeles Fashion Week, walking for American designer Bree Billiter, Colombian designer Nathalia Gaviria, and Mexican designer Jonathan Guzman.

She made her New York Fashion Week debut in February 2020 as one of the few models with Down Syndrome to participate in the important fashion event.

Sofía has also modeled at San Juan Moda in Puerto Rico, and is currently focused on conquering the runways at different fashion events in Europe and other parts of the world. She also dreams of working as an actress and dancer.

With October marking World Down Syndrome Month, this interview has been a great honor for me. With Sofía’s example I can show my beautiful niece, also born with Down Syndrome and who shares the same name as our “Getting to Know” talent, that there are no limits to what she can achieve in her life.

How does it feel to find yourself where you are right now in your life?

I feel very happy, joyful, and grateful for everything I have achieved. Being able to break barriers and inspire others motivates me to keep going.

How has the support of your family influenced you to achieve your goals?

My family supports me in everything. They have always been there for me and believe in all my dreams. It makes me very happy to have them supporting me.

What has been your favorite moment in your career so far?

My favorite moment has been modeling at New York Fashion Week because that’s where everything started, and there were many cameras and my whole family was there to support me. After that, I have lived many beautiful moments like being the first model with Down Syndrome for Victoria’s Secret and modeling at Los Angeles Fashion Week.

What would your advice be to those who aspire to achieve what you have achieved?

I would tell them to believe in themselves, to fight for their dreams, and to work hard, because we have to work for what we want. No limits, and break barriers!

What do you want your personal legacy to be?

I want my legacy to be that of helping to have a more inclusive and loving world and of inspiring people to fight for their dreams and overcome obstacles.

What’s next for you?

My next dream is to show the whole world that we can be strong, healthy, and fit. I also want to become a good fashion designer and continue modeling all over the world. I am very focused on fulfilling all my dreams.

As an entrepreneur, Sofia launched an online store in 2019. She named it “Alavett,” based on her favorite phrase, “I love it.” The brand offers clothing, accessories, and products for the home.

For the Puerto Rican model, the most important thing about fulfilling her dreams is showing people that there are no limits and inspiring them to fight to make them come true. A phrase that Sofia often uses is, “Inside and out, there are no limits.” Her goal is to motivate people to overcome their self-imposed limitations.

Sofia is also proud of her “No Limits” campaign, which she launched in October 2021 to make visible the challenges faced by the Down Syndrome community and demonstrate their ability to achieve their goals.

She also works as an Experiential Ambassador at the Puerto Rican company INprende, which has supported her in fulfilling her dreams.
