The Art of Gift Giving NYC Style

‘Tis the season to be giving. So don’t for the sake of all things Xmas related be a Grinch. Give something this holiday season, whether it be a bottle of bubbly, or instead go with books or music, just give. If you’re having trouble finding that special something for your office secret Santa or just that family secret Santa, think out of the box. It’s easy to forget, but New York City is a treasure trove of odds and ends from Tiffany to day-glo haircut coupons and protest specials. Here are some go-to unique personalized gifts you can find around the city.

Stores to Adore

For everything for the fashionista on your gift list, you’ll want to head to Bulletin Broads. Broads has glam. Broads has chic and shabby. Broads has attitude and more. Think disco ball crystal earrings and an 80s lip phone pin. Little black dress? Check. Little black clutch? Check. Nude heels? Check. If your friend is more of a friend of books, the Taschen store in Soho is always a good bet. The store has beautiful tomes covering everything from Helmut Newton to MoMa and beyond. For those that love food and drink, Kitchen Arts and Letters was a fave of the late great Anthony Bourdain and has all a foodie could want in word form. Exit 9 Gift Emporium in Brooklyn will sate anyone’s need of last minute gifts and quirky things related to NYC. Exit 9 also has practically everything from tech gifts to kitchen gadgets and cat shaped nail clippers.

Beyond Basics

Another way to think about the art of gift giving is by getting crafty. If someone you know is the Martha Stewart of your group and loves to create, then crafting a personal picture collage is easy with technology and a bit of patience. On top of that give them a subscription for an online collage or craft site. For the Project Runway junkie, head to Fabrics & Fabrics in Midtown West. This fabric store is an NYC staple and has all the color coordinated fabrics. Elliot Berman Textiles is another option. This high-end fabric store is known for supplying its colorful and elegant fabrics to LA and Chicago. Ask your budding designer what kind of projects they are working on or simply get a gift card.

Experiences are also a way to personalize something. Take a friend out for a theme dinner and drinks. Get pampered the next day.  Rest and relax. Go for a spa day. Head out of town with your friends and do a wine tasting or check out NYC abandoned subways stations if you’re friends are in for a thrill.

No matter what kind of gift  you give, a personalized gesture is always appreciated. For one, it tells your friends and loved ones that they are appreciated and secondly, it shows that you took the time to think about their wants, needs and personality.
