Trend-Spotting with Tina Broccole

Wardrobe Envy’s Tina Broccole is a fashion stylist, blogger, and radio host with amazing style. We asked her what to expect for autumn/winter trends for 2017. Here are her favorites…

Trends come and go—and then they come back again, without fail. Just like the return of platform sandals, flared jeans, and bomber jackets, the iconic trends at the Autumn/Winter ‘17 shows have hit viewers with a healthy dose of nostalgia. The best part about their return? They’re more luxurious and wearable than ever. And I’m here to highlight some of my favorite blasts from the past.

Space Age

Metallics are one of those timeless elements that can be reinvented season after season. Designers like Saint Laurent, Chanel, Loewe, and Maison Margiela have channeled this rocket-to-the-moon vibe and ran with it, knocking other fabrics and textures to the wind. Not only are these silvers dominating runways, but they’re also featured in all of your favorite Fifth Avenue stores as well. Space Age is a trend that takes a lot of confidence to pull off—think disproportionate silhouettes, extremely bejeweled accessories, and mesh highlights. If you have the confidence to do it, autumn is sure to be an out-of-this-world season for you!

Get Down to Business

Whether you take your inspiration from Solange, Rihanna, or Hillary Clinton, every woman can find the occasion to rock a power suit. If you want to throw it way back for inspo, think Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Cindy Crawford, and Karyn Parsons. Any way you cut it, this shoulder-padded trend always finds its way back onto the runways and into our hearts. Designers like Hermes, Alexander McQueen, and Celine have hit the nail on the head this year, finding the perfect balance between retro posh and contemporary chic. Go all out to complete this look with ’80s-inspired accessories like kitten heels, small boxy clutches, and DIY-esque earrings.

Cozy Warm and Shaggy Chic

We’ve all heard of street style trends. But how about “Sesame Street”-style? While shaggy coats may not have been the hottest trend back in the ’70s, shag carpet definitely was. And the carpet has returned, incognito, as the beloved Muppet Coat. Available in all colors and shapes, the oversized furry friend has been one of the most photographed street style garments of 2017. It’s warm outside now, but just wait for it to cool down—you’ll be seeing more of these come chilly months. Miu Miu, Emilio Pucci, Louis Vuitton, and Mary Katrantzou are some of the designers whose lines I’m coveting this season. Remember to tune into my radio show, “Fashion Friday with Tina,” on in the coming weeks to hear more about this must-have layer!

Home on the Range

Western Americana may be one of the most accessible trends for all budgets this season, hitting fast fashion stores and designer labels alike. Get your “Old West” fix by accessorizing with silver belt buckles, turquoise stone jewelry, fringed dresses, and more. Want to go all out? Check out the latest garments from Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, and Alexander Wang. These designers are paying homage to our country in a big—and fashionable—way, producing pieces like quilted parkas, folklore denim, and even American flag skirts. If you keep up to date on my Instagram (@Wardrobe_Envy) and blog (, you’ll see how I’ll be rocking this favorite trend in new ways.

Seeing Red

Crimson. Scarlet. Fire-engine red. This is a color some women shy away from in fear it will be too overpowering. I’m here to tell you to get rid of that negative attitude right now, because red is not only everywhere this season, it’s also the perfect color for nearly every complexion. Whether you’re fair-skinned and light-haired, red-headed, olive-skinned, have long black locks or natural curly hair and rich deep skin, I can guarantee you that red is your color. In the market for a wardrobe color update? You can find looks that fit your lifestyle and shape at designers like Prada, Fendi, and Max Mara. Gorgeous silhouettes and details have me daydreaming about which red pieces I want to add to my closet next.
