The exterior has been restored in order to maintain its official 1937 landmark status, and now incorporates modern clean lines consistent with the interior design aesthetics.
The main entrance is anchored by two mosaic murals, custom-made by LMF Group using renderings by Milanese artist Piero Fornasetti that have been re-created using silver leaf and torch-burnt reclaimed white oak. Designed by Otte Architecture, the dining room is a bright, light-filled space for social dining in a relaxed yet elegant atmosphere, and the lower level houses the tavern, where dark woods and rich tones are complemented by antique brass finishes.
Executive Chef Aksel Theilkuhl, a protégé of Chef Laurent Tourondel, has created a menu of shareable plates and updated tavern classics, all sourced from small local farms. Chef Theilkuhl uses avant-garde techniques and the freshest seasonal produce and highest quality local dairy and meats, to create dishes that are both approachable and worldly. Menu standouts include Lamb Tartare, Bourbon Braised Bacon, Fluke Crudo and Fava Bean Ravioli.
Matching the food step for step, the bar at Washington Market Tavern features craft spirits expertly blended with fresh herbs, house-made tinctures, and artisanal bitters. Beverage Director Ste King works collaboratively with Chef Theilkuhl to use local, seasonal ingredients in a cocktail list that showcases drinks from the Golden Age, as well as modern concoctions and classics with a twist. The wine program features an extensive by-the-glass list from around the world with over 30 selections.
The team behind Washington Market Tavern, headed by Tribeca local Eric Schwimmer, brings years of restaurant savvy coupled with unique insight into the neighborhood.
