You may know this singer from her 2015 album “Shuteye”, and have been wondering where she went. Well, Logan Brill just came out with two brand new songs, “Good Story” & “Giving Up,”, her first new material since taking a break from the spotlight. The artist, featured on Rolling Stone’s “10 New Country Artists You Need to Know” list, also made her return to the Grand Ole Opry in August, and she’s here to stay. How did you find your way into singing?
I grew up in a family of music lovers, so my musical education was always a priority. We spent a lot of time sitting around picking on guitars and singing together, so I fell in love with music at a young age.
Can you tell us the stories behind “Good Story” and “Giving Up”?
Good Story is actually an outside song that I didn’t write, it was written by John Randall and Luke Dick. The minute I first heard it I immediately connected with it and thought about all the crazy things that have happened over the years on the road. In a way, it felt like a way for me to sing about what I’d be doing the past several years since my last release – driving around the country in my shuttle bus making good stories.
Giving Up came from a really personal place. I was in a long term relationship that I was fighting to try to maintain, but I was also touring really heavily, and it was hard to balance the two. I felt like every time I’d leave again I’d emotionally give up on the relationship. I remember sitting on the bus one day thinking, I’m tired of giving up on this person every time I leave town. So I wrote down the refrain, and soon after pitched the idea to Randy Montana and Jacob Powell.
Where do you get your inspiration while writing songs?
For me, inspiration comes from a lot of different places. I’m inspired by the things I’m going through personally, and sometimes things that my friends are going through. Sometimes it’s just a title that comes into my mind that I want to chase just because I love the way it sounds.
Does songwriting help you cope with personal struggles?
Songwriting can be a beautiful outlet for personal struggles. It can be really cathartic to write about something personal…to really explore and discover that emotion and figure out how to put it in words.
Growing up, who was your biggest musical influence?
Bonnie Raitt is my biggest musical influence. I’ve always idolized her, in part because of her amazing voice, but also because she’s a strong female artist who has something important to say. I think that’s what I try to channel in my music too.
If you could sing alongside any person, who would it be?
Like I said, Bonnie Raitt is one of my idols, so singing alongside her would be pretty incredible. But I’d also love to sing with Dolly Parton…she’s an East Tennessee girl like me.
Are you currently working on more music? What else is on the horizon for you?
I definitely have some new music in the works right now, which I’m really excited to share sometime this fall. In the meantime, I’m headed out on a European tour with the Wood Brothers…in fact I’m sitting at the airport waiting to board a flight now. Then hitting the road stateside in the fall. Can’t wait to start sharing ‘Good Story’ & ‘Giving Up’ with fans live!
